As you flip through the glossy pages of home decorating magazines, scroll through Pinterest’s “Home Decor” pinboard, or troll Houzz at 3AM your thoughts remain basically the same…I love that, I want that, I need that, but the kitchen remodeling project looks way too; expensive, time-consuming, or daunting.

Where do you start?

I want to spend this post narrowing in on exactly the answer to that very BIG question.  Our goal at William Charles, Inc. is to make the process of a kitchen remodel a pleasant and positive experience.  We want to help you realize your dreams through our expertise, optimize the heart of your home to not only work well with your lifestyle, but reflect your style effortlessly.

Follow these five easy steps to kitchen remodeling nirvana.

Step 1:  What do you need?

You can answer that question, by first answering these questions.

How do you utilize your kitchen?

How many people use the space (to cook, eat, or gather)?

Is it large enough or do you need to use additional space?

Start collecting any ideas you have about layouts and features, keep them in a file on your computer or in a scrapbook or binder.

Use resources like, kitchen showrooms, tile stores, magazines, Houzz, friend’s homes, or blogs.

Step 2: Research & Plan

Ready to begin your project?  The next most important steps are formulating the scope of work and figuring out your preliminary budget.  Both of these may change, don’t become discouraged if it does, change is progress, and progress is good.

Step 3: Find the Professionals

Once you begin interacting with licensed construction professionals you start collecting knowledge, this information might ultimately change what you want.  Be open to their suggestions and take them into advisement, but be firm with what you want and expect from the project.   Even if you are going to mostly DIY it, you will eventually need to come in contact with some professionals, be it for plumbing, electrical, or just to order appliances.  Ask a friend, colleague, or relative for a referral, ask them about their experience with the professional, which can be almost as important as the job they did.   Be sure to hire a licensed and insured designer, builder, contractor, or architect to help with permitting, material selection, and drawings.

Step 4: Schematic Design

This step encompases sketches, space planning, elevations, preliminary floorplan, and cabinet sizes.  Try to focusing on the layout and space planning, instead of the style, as it can distract from getting the proper integration of workspace areas.  This planning phase will figure out where materials go and help with getting quotes and estimates on how much you will need of each material and possible cost.

Step 5: Fixtures & Finishes

All of your ideas collected throughout and before you started the actual project are now going to be utilized to focus your style; whether modern, traditional, or classic.  White kitchens, stained, or painted cabinets.  Besides that you need to choose; cabinetry construction type, door-style, finish or color, cabinet hardware, the countertop material, backsplash, appliances, sinks, lighting fixtures, and flooring.

I hope that this has helped a bit in demystifying the process of remodeling your kitchen.  Here at William Charles, Inc. we have set a standard of excellence in assisting our clients along every step of the road to a new kitchen.  Come in today and let us help you wake up to the kitchen of your dreams.
